Sphanagraphy - What they really wrote on clay

In ancient days people wrote on clay tablets and baked them.  These wedge-shaped characters have been called cuneiform (from cuneus, Latin "wedge"), but they really should be called sphanagraphs (from sphana, Greek, "wedge").  Sphanagraphic writing is probably the world's oldest, and sphanagraphy is one of the most interesting studies you can imagine.  It is picture writing, and gives us insight into the minds of those who wrote it.

This blog is a study and critique of the system and what we know about it.
